Psi Chi: The National Honors Society in Psychology

Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Psi Chi serves two major goals: (1) to provide academic recognition to its inductees by the mere fact of membership and (2) to nurture the spark of that accomplishment by offering a climate congenial to members' creative development. The Society publishes a quarterly magazine, Eye on Psi Chi, which helps to unite the members, inform them, and recognize their contributions and accomplishments. The quarterly Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research fosters and rewards the scholarly efforts of undergraduate psychology students and provides a valuable learning experience by introducing them to the publishing and review process.

Psi Chi provides national recognition for academic excellence in psychology, an honor which can be noted on employment applications, vitae, and resumés. Psi Chi also provides over $250,000 annually in awards and grants to its student members and chapters.

The City College of New York chapter of Psi Chi was chartered in 1961, and has supported both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research interests in such areas as clinical, experimental, social, and developmental psychology.

Membership in Psi Chi is open to qualified candidates of any age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, and national and ethnic origin. Membership is for life. The national registration fee of $35 is the only payment ever made to the national organization, which does not charge dues. Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests, and who meet the minimum qualifications.

If you are an undergraduate you:

• Must be at least a second-semester sophomore
• Must be enrolled as a major or minor in psychology
• Must have completed at least 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses
• Must have an overall GPA that is in the top 35% of your class
• Must have a psychology GPA that is at least 3.70, and an overall GPA that is at least 3.50 

If you are a graduate student you:

• Must be enrolled as a graduate student in one of the graduate (Masters or Ph.D.) programs in psychology
• Must have an overall GPA of at least 3.75 in all graduate courses, including psychology courses
