CCNY Study Abroad in Morocco

Standard Arabic Language & Maghreb Culture
WINTER 2008/09 - JANUARY 4-26, 2009
The urban oasis that is Rabat will be the setting of this exciting program where students experience the mélange that characterizes Moroccan culture with its ancient Arab, Muslim, Berber traditions, French sensibilities, and it’s proximity with Spain, Gibraltar, and Portugal. Students will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves with their host families as the program provides home-stays. The City College Morocco Winter Program offers a unique learning opportunity, by combining lectures by Moroccan scholars, with travel around the country, meeting the locals or the ever-exciting experience of bargaining in the bazaar!
This is a three-week Study Abroad program in Rabat, Morocco, offered in collaboration with the Center for Cross Cultural Learning, Rabat, Morocco. Students will study abroad in the month of January but will register for academic credit in the Spring semester, 2009.
Academic credit will be awarded as follows:
1. Introduction to Modern Standard Arabic: 1 credit*
*(A one credit tutorial will be substituted for more advanced students.)
2. Seminar on Culture, Class and Gender in Morocco: 3 credits.
There will be a final exam for the Arabic course. A 15-20 page research paper is required for the Seminar on Culture, Class and Gender.
Field trips to Fez, Marrakesh, Ouezzan, and Chefchouen will be integrated with the curriculum, and cultural performances and activities included as well.
Students will be housed in home-stays for part of the time, and in a downtown two-star hotel for part of the time. Program costs include field trips. Students must provide proof of good health, and obtain health insurance to cover their study abroad.
There will be a pre-departure orientation at City College in November, 2008. This is mandatory. There will be more information sessions and it is important that students attend them all.
